Friday Night Lights: Arkansas, Villanova, Louisville, Memphis

Saturday March 22, 2008
(9) Arkansas 86, (8) Indiana 72: The Razorbacks put the Hoosiers out of their misery, ending Indiana's season (and, most likely, Dan Dakich's run as coach) with a 86-72 win. Forwards Sonny Weems (31 points) and Darian Townes (17 points, 12 boards) led the way for Arkansas.

Indiana senior D.J. White may have enhanced his NBA draft stock with a strong game, scoring 22 points and grabbing nine rebounds despite early foul trouble -- but freshman sensation Eric Gordon's struggles, which seem to coincide with the ouster of Kelvin Sampson continued. He shot just 3-of-15 from the floor and scored eight points.

Indiana will likely have a very different look next season. White will be gone. Gordon -- considered by most to be a top-five draft pick -- will probably leave as well. And the fact that the university couldn't wait until after the season to formally begin its coaching search certainly doesn't bode well for Dakich's chances to retain the job.

(12) Villanova 75, (5) Clemson 69: The next time the NCAA holds a regional in Tampa, higher seeds will be begging not to be sent there. Jay Wright's Wildcats continued the run of low-seed dominance in St. Pete, knocking Clemson out of the tournament. Their win in the nightcap followed upset victories by Western Kentucky, San Diego, and Siena in the same building.

As is their trademark, Villanova won with excellent guard play. Scottie Reynolds scored 21 points and Corey Fisher added 17, as the Wildcat guards were able to evade Clemson's frenetic full-court pressure and get to the rack. And as we've seen so often in the tournament thus far, the team that was more accurate from long range won: 'Nova shot better than 50% from three (7-13) while Clemson's percentage was just 27% (9-33).

(3) Louisville 79, (14) Boise State 61: In something of a rarity in Friday's action, the higher seed won and did so convincingly, as Rick Pitino's Cardinals outclassed the Boise State Broncos in terms of size, strength, athleticism and depth. The Cardinals built up a 42-26 first-half lead and cruised down the stretch, punctuating the win with several highlight-reel dunks at the end.

(16) Texas-Arlington 63, (1) Memphis 87: The top-seeded Tigers, like some of the other high seeds in this tournament, came out a bit flat against an unheralded opponent. The Mavericks of Texas-Arlington, making their first-ever NCAA appearance -- actually held a lead in the opening minutes.

Briefly.

Chris Douglas-Roberts led the Tigers with 23 points, one of five Memphis players scoring in double-figures, sparked a 15-2 run that woke up John Calipari's team, and the Tigers cruised to a convincing 24-point win.
